Julia MacMilllain

Throughout Julia's work you can see Italian and Japanese influences in the colours and brushstrokes - but what is most predominant is a continual fascination with texture. She often works on multiple panels and uses laminated board as a surface and shellac, a tree resin, as a medium which she mixes with pure pigments. In her studio you find an exotic variety of substances such as Dragon's Blood pigment, Van Dyke crystals and 22 carat Moongold. She has a love for Japanese art and in particular the gold and silver leaf screens of the Rinpa school and Zen calligraphy.
